Event Description: Bring the kids to Mosaic Templars Cultural Center for Storytime Saturday on Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. 11 a.m. to noon: Dave The Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave by Laban Carrick Hill, illustrated by Bryan Collier Age range: 3-7 years We will read and act out this story about a real person, a slave in South Carolina named Dave, who was not only an accomplished potter and artist, but also a poet. He left simple, poignant poems etched on some of his pots. After the story, we will move to the classroom and make coil pots. Students will have the option to etch on their pots a poem, their name or a few words that are important to them. 12:15-1:30 p.m.: Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington by Jabari Asim, illustrated by Bryan Collier Age range: 6-10 years As a child born into slavery, Booker T. Washington only dreamed of learning to read and write. After emancipation, young Washington began a journey, both physical and emotional, that led him to become one of the most important educators in American History. After reading the story, students will learn about Booker T. Washington's connections to the Mosaic Templars of America and read excerpts of one of his speeches in the MTCC auditorium.
